Grand Theft Auto V

There’s something about this trailer for GTA V that amazes me. It’s not that the graphics are higher resolution or more photo realistic. They’re not. I’ve seen new games recently that look much more realistic. Especially when it comes to the people. But the world illustrated in this trailer is amazing nonetheless. It just feels realistically alive. There’s a shot of a guy just crossing the street at the 0:54 second mark that just feels flat out real. I think this shows that there’s more to making a realistic virtual environment than pixel density.

It’s definitely Rockstar’s storytelling that makes the game come alive. But most importantly (I believe), its the individual actions, or the appearance of purpose, of every AI character. I’ve been looping through that 0:54 mark for like 10 times now and what makes it incredibly real for me is the fact that it’s such a candid shot: I know I’m supposed to focus on the car but my periphs catch a man, with his head down, looking like he’s got somewhere to go with something on his mind. Rockstar has done an amazing job trying to stay as far away from cookie cutter characters and experiences as possible (one example being the amount of care given to the radio stations). I couldn’t agree more that realism extends far beyond pixels. I think the advent of Tamagotchis and The Sims helped prove that.
